Abstract

Students are not being provided enough opportunities to participate in school sports in local public middle schools. Thus, many students are not realizing and enjoying the benefits of participating in sports; namely, improved academic performance, social skills, health, and self esteem. To gain perspective on the current status of interscholastic sports in local middle schools, it was necessary to interview stakeholders. Administrators, teachers, and students were interviewed. Emergent themes indicated that many students were excluded from participating in school sports due to their competitive nature, the limited number of available positions on teams, and the lack of interesting sports. Based on the results of this research, an intramural league was created in which all students were invited to participate. It is hoped that providing additional opportunities to participate in interscholastic sports will greatly benefit a larger number of students.
