Abstract

In order to help improve the lives of today’s students, the researcher focused on childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is significantly increasing and is swiftly becoming a national epidemic. It can lead to many serious long and short-term health risks, as well as emotional problems. Research shows one way of combating this issue is to increase physical education and activity during the school day. The researcher interviewed local teachers to learn more about what their physical education programs look like. The researcher learned that teachers are using their own time to prepare lessons and often lack the resources to create fun, motivating lessons to get children engaged and active. The researcher found an online interactive program, Just Run that assists teachers and promotes fitness to their students. The program turns running into a game, encouraging them to race across America using an online program. Focusing on easily accomplished goals in physical education is just one-step in the right direction towards combating childhood obesity today.
