Abstract

Multicultural education has become a core component in current teacher education. One of the goals of multicultural education in preparing future teachers to effectively work in culturally diverse classrooms is to have them examine the social role they play as teacher. Educators of prospective teachers are working to prepare students with the necessary skills that aim to enable students in becoming multicultural aware individuals and agents of social change. Challenges to addressing issues in multicultural education for prospective teachers has placed a focus on the need for white prospective teachers to examine the perceptions and assumptions of their personal belief systems and to become aware of the need for critical racial consciousness. One of the ways in which they are attempting to do this is by addressing the topics of white privilege and whiteness in teacher education programs and courses.
