Abstract

This research takes an in-depth look at teen pregnancy prevention programs offered within public schools in California, with an emphasis on Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. Past and current programs are examined along with current educational state standards for comprehensive sexual education. Three teen pregnancy program providers were interviewed and 18 teens were surveyed in order to gain a better understand of the current status of this issue on a local level. This research resulted in a letter being written and sent to the state and county superintendents of education, asking them to mandate comprehensive sexual education for all public high schools. It is vital for the health and growth of society to encourage teens to wait to start families until they are financially and emotionally prepared, and to provide them with the necessary education and resources they need to make responsible decisions now and in the future.
