Abstract

Inclusion of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning) perspectives in public schools has historically been minimal at best. As of 2011, with California’s passage of Senate Bill 48/The FAIR Education Act, inclusion of LGBTQ perspectives is not only encouraged in schools, but also required. In this Capstone project, the researchers will investigate the current levels of LGBTQ inclusion in local public schools through interviews of school administrators, board members, and teachers. Our findings at the local school level combined with extensive literature research will make up the necessary information to be included in our informational brochure. This brochure will be presented at local school board meetings in an effort to get information regarding LGBTQ inclusion into schools. The results from our pamphlet proposal combined with our local findings and other research will help us to better identify where local school districts stand in regards to LGBTQ inclusion, as well as how California schools might improve their educational practices to be more inclusive.
