Abstract

This thesis discusses the development of an Independent Study course of Chinese language after intermediate level at California State University, Monterey Bay. The course was developed based on the needs of the learners, aiming to provide a guide for those learners of Chinese with the continuation of their language maintenance and development. The thesis addressed how a course can help improvee second language learners' performances as well as competences. The thesis rests on the belief that second language can be learned independently, and on the disbelief that a textbook should be the syllabus of a language course. The thesis includes a syllabus for the learners and suggestions for the prospective instructor(s) as well.
