Abstract

This action research explores how changing the pedagogy from a drill and practice approach, to one that inspires higher-order thinking skills, helps to empower students. In this research, the method used to develop higher-order thinking skills is Socratic Circles. This research is based on the premise that students who attend under-funded, minority-rich schools are taught to be workers rather than leaders; developing these skills will aid students in filling future leadership roles.
