Abstract

Supporting English Language Learners in Reading: A Project for Increasing Phonemic Awareness Skills The purpose of this project was to create a phonological resource tool that non-English speaking parents can use at home to practice and learn letter names and sounds, blending, and segmenting skills via drill exercises. A review of the literature addressing rapid automatized naming, phonological awareness, and cross-linguistic transfer as well as input from three content specialists informed the development of the project. A set of practice exercises, an alphabet chart, and a chart of Elkonin boxes was created and made available in a set of two CDs.
