Abstract
Anthropology has become one of the most fascinating and engaging disciplines in the vast field of scientific knowledge. Moving beyond the periods of contact and domination of the 15th through 20th Centuries, the world observed by anthropologists has moved into a new phase of interdependency and communications that must be addressed as a theme of central interest to the discipline. It is in this context that migration is, without a doubt, the central most important issue of our days, particularly as it unfolds in the context of all other remarkable events and concerns of our times (economic development, the environment, religious violence, cultural imperialism and resistance). The author calls attention to the emergence and consolidation of a transnational culture of consumption, crystallizing in the age of massive economic migrations that have signified the human experience in recent decades.
La antropología continúa siendo hoy en día una de las disciplinas más fascinantes en el amplio espectro del mundo del conocimiento científico. Rebasando las épocas del contacto histórico y dominación de los siglos XV al XX, el mundo ha entrado en una fase de desarrollo interdependiente y de comunicación que es insoslayable como tema de interés. En este contexto la migración es sin duda el gran tema de nuestros días; se desarrolla como eje sobre el cual se despliegan otros grandes fenómenos y preocupaciones como son el desarrollo y el medio ambiente, los enfrentamientos religiosos, el imperialismo cultural y la resistencia en sus infinitas manifestaciones de creación y recreación de las culturas. No menos importante y central para el antropólogo urbano, es el surgimiento de una cultura transnacional del consumo que se concreta en esta era de las migraciones masivas.
