CSUMB Snapshots, 1995-2002 documents the early years of California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). Founded in 1994, when the closure of Fort Ord created an opportunity to transform the former military base’s facilities into an institution of higher education, CSUMB first started offering classes on August 28, 1995.

The photographs in this exhibit, many of which were taken by University Advancement staff member Steve Zmak, capture the evolution of the campus over the first seven years of its existence, from the planning and development of curriculum and building construction to the first commencement ceremonies. Several sections of the exhibit feature candid moments between CSUMB staff, faculty, students, and alumni working together on campus, celebrating milestones, and participating in community outreach. Also represented are clubs and activities, instructional sessions in and outside the classroom, aerial views of campus, and events such as the opening of the Library Learning Complex and the first president’s symposium.
