The Brandenburg 300 Project Honors Irwin (Woody) Woodland

Woody's wisdom and calm presence helped me so much in my life, in so many different ways, that all I can do is say thank you.

Woody (by his children)

Irwin Francis 'Woody' Woodland was born in New York City on September 2, 1922, son of John J. Woodland and Mary Hynes Woodland. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1940. He served in the United States Army Air Corps as a navigator, flying missions over Germany and Italy. He was a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III and was released in 1945. Woody graduated from Columbia University in 1948. He graduated from the Law School of Ohio State University in Columbus in 1959. Woody joined the law firm of Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher as an associate in 1960 and retired a partner in 1992. He became a member of the California State Bar Association in 1960 and the Washington State Bar Association in 1991. He met Sally Duffy in 1950 and they were married on September 23, 1954. Woody and Sally were married for 50 years until her death in 2005. They lived in Pacific Palisades, CA from 1960 through 1988 and spent their retirement years in Seattle. Many people knew Woody in many different capacities. We knew him as our Dad. He was our father, our friend and most trusted confidant. He enjoyed us and loved us as individuals, but he was never happier than being in the midst of the familial ruckus. Children, grandchildren, in-laws, family friends - all fell within the compass of his paternal embrace. Woody is survived by his sister, Catherine Howley of Newburgh, NY and his seven children, Connie Woodland (Robert Peterson) of San Pedro, CA; Patrick (Lisa) of San Juan Capistrano, CA; Joseph (Katherine) of Olympia, WA; Rev. Stephen Woodland of Seattle, WA; William (Linette) of Palos Verdes, CA; David Woodland of Seattle; and Duffy Woodland (Tricia) of Stevenson Ranch, CA. He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren.
