Abstract
My research focused on the effect of COVID-19 on students’ mental health. The questions I asked during my interviews dealt with identifying what aspects of students’ mental health were affected by COVID-19, and what resources were available to mitigate those adverse effects. In addition, to what extent were student’s mental health affected, and how students viewed themselves and their schooling because of COVID-19’s effects. Parents were also interviewed to understand how COVID-19 affected them and how parents saw its effects on their children. The interviews were conducted one-on-one. Based on my research, school counseling provided and/or could provide a depreciation of negative mental health issues. Although students and parents felt like more could have been done, the comments for needed change made by the students were also the same comments counselors felt should’ve been implemented or will be implemented upon in-person teaching. Fundamentally, redistributing and refocusing resources with students’ mental health needs in mind provided significant advantages for students and faculty alike.
