Abstract

The Harden Wellness Center is located in Salinas, California on the campus of Harden Middle School. After surveying and interviewing eighth-grade students at Harden Middle School, it was determined that there was a need to provide healthy coping skills for stress and anxiety. The project provided students a place to learn healthy coping skills along with normalizing mental health services among adolescents. In order to engage students and keep them interested each week, focus on a new skill with an activity attached to reinforce the coping skill. By the end of the six weeks, the group started to talk about implementing anti-anxiety methods they were using outside of the group to help them cope with stress and anxiety. By the end of the project, it was obvious to see that all students should be screened every quarter for mental health needs, even if the student does not have a history of needing services from the Wellness Center. Along with this observation, it is also noted that every school district should implement a therapeutic approach to supporting students with their mental health needs.
