Abstract
The need for emotional support for male students aged fourteen to eighteen, led to the development of a pilot gender specific support group that was implemented in September 2017. This project has been supported by Santa Cruz County Office of Education’s Student Support Services Department. The purpose of this project was to create a safe environment for students to share their personal experiences and emotions, as well as to bring awareness on topics such as masculinity ideas, emotional expression, substance abuse, and relationships. The group was held at an alternative education program in the county and met once perk week for 45 minute sessions. The evaluation period for this project was six weeks long and pre and post surveys were given to assess student satisfaction, feelings of safety, and learning. Based upon the post-survey results, this project was successful. There is a strong hope that the Santa Cruz County Office of Education will continue this program in future years.
