Abstract
Too many high school students are not college or career ready when they graduate. At Learning For Life Charter School, the school counselor and the intern worked together to implement a project to address the issue. The community served was 7th graders to 12th graders. A lot of these students were on the verge of dropping out or completely dropped out of traditional school. The capstone project consisted of taking 10 students on a field trip to a community college nearby. The purpose of this trip was to give students the opportunity to see their options after high school and have the ability to envision themselves attending college. The project met the expected outcomes of increased confidence, motivation, and increased knowledge about applications, financial aid, and requirements. The survey results showed clear improvements in students’ confidence, knowledge, and understanding of college pathways. After the program, more students reported being “Very confident” or “Extremely confident” about their plans after high school, showing increased self assurance about their future. This project matters for health and human services practice because it addresses key social determinants of health which are education and access to information.
