Abstract
Latine adolescents experience high rates of stress, depression, and stigma surrounding mental health, in part due to limited access to culturally responsive support and safe spaces for connection. The purpose of this internship project was to develop and implement a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, mental wellbeing curriculum to address barriers related to stigma, limited culturally responsive support, and disconnection, while supporting emotional awareness, connection, and use of grounding strategies among youth. The project was implemented through United Way Santa Cruz County in partnership with Watsonville High School and Soquel High School and served high school-aged youth. Development of the curriculum included research on youth mental wellbeing, culturally responsive practices, and trauma-informed approaches, as well as coordination with community partners to ensure the content was relevant and accessible. Key activities included bilingual, interactive sessions that integrated culturally responsive practices such as Cafecito/Chocolate Caliente y Conchas conversations, reflection exercises, grounding techniques like breathing beads, creative expression through glow tiles, group discussions, and a planting wellness activity. As a result of the project, participants showed increased understanding of mental wellbeing, greater comfort discussing emotions, and improved confidence in using coping and self-regulation strategies. Participants also reported a stronger sense of connection and belonging within the group setting, as reflected in post-survey responses and session reflections. These findings suggest that providing culturally responsive, trauma-informed spaces can support youth in developing emotional awareness, strengthening connections, and engaging with mental wellbeing in more open and meaningful ways.
