Abstract
This capstone project focuses on the role of family dynamics in adolescent mental health. Teens who lack strong family support often develop mental health problems such as stress, anxiety, and depression. When families struggle with communication and have little emotional connection, teens may feel alone, misunderstood, or unsupported, which can lead to poor overall performance and emotional difficulties. When parents of teens learn family communication skills and techniques for providing emotional support, they are better able to reduce conflict and help manage issues like emotional withdrawal. To address this issue, I created a one-day workshop to educate them about mental health and coping strategies, and to focus on improving family communication skills and emotional support strategies. This workshop was taught at the Hartnell Alisal campus in Salinas, California, and was taught to adolescents and peers aged 17 and up.
