Abstract

Too few children in Soledad have regular access and connection to outdoor spaces, leading to increased stress and fewer opportunities for positive mental health outcomes. This capstone project was implemented at Ventana Wildlife Society through the Nature Coach Pilot Program, promoting mental health through individualized outdoor plans throughout Monterey County. The program primarily serves underserved communities with limited access to local parks and outdoor resources, while also being open to the general public. The purpose of this project was to support the implementation of the Nature Coach Pilot Program by increasing awareness of accessible green spaces and encouraging engagement in outdoor recreational activities. Implementation included co-facilitating guided outdoor activities and developing an organized database of parks in Monterey County to help create personalized activity plans based on participants’ ZIP codes. Expected long-term outcomes included increased awareness of local parks and greater engagement in outdoor activities. While the project was not fully implemented, stakeholder feedback suggests the Nature Coach program has strong potential to improve access to nature and support mental well-being. Recommendations include expanding outreach efforts, incorporating participant feedback, and continuing to develop resources to improve access to local green spaces.
