Abstract
Substance use among youth is often a response to various factors such as lack of parental involvement, peer pressure, and traumatic experiences. The purpose of the substance use youth group is to provide a safe space in which youth can openly talk about their substance use without fear of repercussions or judgement. Utilizing the decision model method known as 7-Challenges, psycho-education, and motivational interviewing the group provided a safe space for youth to honestly discuss what they liked about drugs and how substances have impacted their lives. The group identified the importance of parental involvement, promoted positive social and community involvement, as well as increased awareness of coping skills to combat their triggers. Adolescents can feel that they are alone in their road to recovery, providing a substance youth group allowed for a setting in which they were able to connect with other youth and provide support for each other.
