Abstract
Colorism has long been a major issue in the media and in communities. Colorism is a practice of discrimination in which those with lighter skin are treated more favorably than those with darker skin. It is the product of racism in the US, in that it upholds white standards of beauty and benefits lighter skin people in various US institutions. For my capstone project, I presented a workshop on colorism in a 9th grade class at Marina High School. The students learned the definition of colorism and how it relates to racism. They also learned about the effects of colorism on people's self-esteem and self-image. Finally, the students did an activity in which they identified colorism in the media
