Abstract
In my capstone, I look at the consequences of Ukraine's Euromaidan revolution (2013-2014) that occurred due to government unwillingness to sign an association agreement with the European Union. In particular, I focus on ethno-nationalism and the role language plays in nation building. Ukraine is a former Soviet country whose official language is Ukrainian with a large population of ethnic Russians who use Russian as their primary language. I study how modern Ukrainian identity is melded by both the aspiration to join the European Union and the rejection of the Soviet past — particularly Russian language.
