Abstract
The Watsonville Police Activities League is a youth crime prevention program. Watsonville PAL works with youth from the city of Watsonville to help reduce the high rates of youth violence in the community. In efforts to help reduce youth violence in the community, Watsonville PAL relies on educational, athletic, and other recreational activities to positively support the youth. The lack of parental involvement, too much exposure to violence, and the negative connotation of police officers among youth contribute to the high rate of youth violence. Youth violence also negatively impacts the safety of communities. Youth violence is also the number one leading cause of premature deaths. The barriers to service delivery that Watsonville PAL faces is lack of staff, transportation, funding, and the Coronavirus pandemic. For my capstone project, I will be addressing a barrier to service delivery problem. I will be redesigning the Fall Festival, an annual community event, into a virtual event. I posted the Halloween Costume Contest on Instagram and reached out to agencies to help promote the event. The deadline came around, and I had no participants who had entered the contest. When I extended the deadline, I had a better outcome. A recommendation that I have if Watsonville PAL decides to do another virtual contest event is to give the members of the community a couple of weeks to enter instead of making the deadline soon after.
