Abstract
ver the past fifteen years the city of Salinas has been experiencing large increases in urban sprawl. Many people in Salinas are not aware of the environmental problems urban sprawl can cause. Providing information to the public about urban sprawl could be very useful in helping the citizens of Salinas make informed decisions about managing urban sprawl in their city. The goal of this capstone is to analyze the growth of Salinas from 1985 to the present day using remote sensing techniques. By analyzing percent change of undeveloped to developed land over time estimates can be made about future growth in the Salinas area. The results of this study will then be presented to the public as a flyer. This flyer can then used by local agencies such as Land Watch, as a way to stimulate public awareness about urban sprawl. Increased public awareness will allow the citizens in Salinas to make more sound decisions regarding this issue.
