Abstract
he CDROM, "GIS Data of the Monterey Bay," is a documented compilation of oceanographic and related geographic information system (GIS) data for the Monterey Bay region. I assisted in its creation at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute during the summer of 1998 until its release in the fall that same year. Its primary audience includes the marine-related research and educational communities of the Monterey vicinity. The CD is intended for use in scientific research, mission planning, and publications, however it is expected the user have some familiarity with GIS. This Capstone project involves the creation of an accompanying diskette to be used by educators in the classroom that accomplishes the following: provides an introduction to the basic concepts and tools of GIS, introduces the CDROM, "GIS Data of the Monterey Bay," applies GIS technology to an integrated marine science issue. A Service Learning Component was added to the Capstone to help implement the ideas of several educators into a self-sustaining teaching tool for both their students and their own learning.
