Abstract
Presently, the state of California has mandated the proctoring of several different standardized tests. This research project examines the history of such tests as well as the controversy surrounding them focusing on the way in which programs such as STAR manipulate class curriculums and ultimately undermine teacher's ability to teach. The project then demonstrates the level of thinking achieved by seniors at a local high school who are given an opportunity to engage in a critical thinking test in comparison to a multiple-choice, standardized test.
