Abstract
The benefits of arts integration in education are astounding, and yet this approach is barely tapped into. Offering a new look at how teachers can incorporate art into their curriculum, this capstone project examines how Monterey Bay area visual arts could be used as a means for teaching students their core subjects, about their homes in California, the histories of their local communities, and more about themselves. The results of this research showed that meaningful, well-planned lesson plans integrating regional art into elementary education may maximize student engagement, involvement, and understanding—especially for students with autism.
