Abstract
Throughout my life I have seen many children struggle with reading. Through my experiences in elementary classrooms, I have seen the problem up close. By the fourth grade, students are expected to have learned how to read, and are developing skills in reading to learn across content areas. Unfortunately, if they cannot read well then they cannot learn. Data collection included student surveys and interviews as well as teacher and parent interviews. Findings collected from parent, teacher and student interviews revealed that students struggle for many reasons such as the need for additional help in the classroom and outside of the classroom. The interviews and survey data suggest that in addition to individualized reading help, parent involvement is needed as well. To address these issues, the action project focused on providing individualized reading help for the targeted struggling readers and a literature circle with the whole class.
