Abstract
The No Child Left behind Act left schools with little room for Arts Education. Teachers and students suffer under pressure to meet academic criteria through rigorous standardized tests. Disadvantaged minority children, especially English language learners, are among the most unmotivated students in our public schools. The research examined benefits of dance on students’ academic engagement in their learning at the elementary school level. Dance classes were provided to students who attended regularly an After School Program. Data was collected from parents and teachers through surveys to determine their perspectives on dance as a process for engaging students in their learning. The result indicated that students enjoyed and felt motivated to learn after taking dance classes after school.
