Abstract
Many elementary schools are lacking the proper policies, procedures, materials, and/or staff to keep students safe. The observation that I have made over the years in elementary schools, inspired me to investigate what is taking place in schools to maintain and provide safety for students. The violent events that have occurred at schools over recent decades are another reason why I wanted to investigate what elementary schools principals are doing or planning to do in order to protect their students. Two principals from different schools were interviewed and discussed what they were doing to prevent harm/violence in their schools and what more can be done to protect their students. I created a ‘safety checklist’ with different procedures that have been effective for elementary schools and have passed it on to the principals of elementary schools throughout Salinas.
