Abstract
Teachers have an important role in shaping the lives and opinions of their students. The questions posed include should controversial issues and current events be included in the teaching of students, and if so, how do teachers handle these touchy issues? With differing familial viewpoints, disputes about current events, and differences in teachers’ personal beliefs, teaching the information in a way that pleases everyone is near impossible. For this Capstone Project, the researcher will investigate how seasoned teachers view teaching controversial issues, balancing their own beliefs and differing family viewpoints and what they think could be done to improve how controversial issues are taught. Based on an analysis of the data and the relevant research literature, the researcher will use what she has learned to formulate an action that responds to the focus issue in a way that inspires, informs, or involves a particular audience.
