Abstract

Communication between teachers and parents affects the quality of the classroom environment and students’ learning experience. Staying informed about activities, student behavior, assignments and homework are only few examples. Unfortunately communication is not effective if the parents do not or cannot receive it. Communication is further hindered if parents do not speak English resulting in a lack of participation both in the classroom and at home. I surveyed 20 elementary school teachers about what method of communication they use with their students’ parents. Also included in the survey was what type of parent involvement they welcomed. Research has shown that student achievement increases with parent involvement. But, parent involvement drops due to language barriers. As a result of completing the above procedures I have constructed a communication packet to aid teachers and parents. The packet has tools and examples of using conventional and technological options for communication.
