Abstract

Children with Special Needs lack equitable opportunities to participate in youth development programming. There is a need for more programming aimed for youth with disabilities and through an inclusion approach. Inclusion programming engages special need children and typical children in the same setting, and allows for the opportunity for interaction. Through my capstone, I observed the inclusion programming for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County. I hosted a Diversity & Disability Awareness Workshop for the Salinas Boys & Girls Clubs members. After participating in my workshop, club members understood individuals with disabilities, were introduced to the diversity of disabilities, and were educated on the importance of peer interaction with members with disabilities. I used a pre & post survey to compare the youth's perception of individuals with special needs from before & after the workshop.
