Abstract
Marina State Beach Park is a fascinating educational resource local in the backyard and across the street from Marina Del Mar Elementary School. Utilizing this coastal gem as a teaching tool, would enable the student populous of Marina Del Mar Elementary School to become aware and involved with their local community and environment. This is important because nearly 89% of the students come from low-income families (Marina Del Mar Elementary School Fact Sheet, 2005-2006 http://www.schoolwisepress.com) and may not have the means by which to travel outside their own neighborhoods. I have created a sixth grade science lesson that would utilize Marina State Beach Park, in conjunction with the California Department of Education Standards. This will offer these students a stimulating hands-on learning experience outside the classroom, and within their local outdoor natural environment.
