Abstract
This paper aims at constructing a Multicultural Curriculum unit in English as a foreign language Literature for the fifth grade students of the Greek elementary school. As Greece is becoming a highly multicultural country, elementary schools need to prepare the Greek students into accepting their immigrant peers and promoting the concepts of democracy and social justice. This multicultural unit in English Literature focuses on the African American culture for two reasons; first, because the students are going to understand the diversity of the American society, and, second, because the study of this culture is going to make the students realize the importance of a democratic society despite any differences in race, religion, gender and ethnicity among the citizens. This unit aims on the one hand at guiding the students grasp the concepts of oppression and discrimination while at the other hand promoting their literacy skills and Multicultural Literature is used as a vehicle toward fulfilling these goals.
