Abstract
Gender identity is a topic that is misunderstood and untouched in elementary schools and rarely if ever integrated into school curriculum. When an elementary school student is exploring his or her gender identity that does not fit typical norms and expectations, it may raise issues of bullying, harassment, and gender stereotyping among peers, and teachers may not recognize or know how to address. In this capstone project, elementary school teachers and administrators were interviewed in order to determine the importance of the implementation of gender identity studies. The results indicated that there is a need to build knowledge and preparation for teachers to recognize and handle gender identity issues that their students may experience. For our action project, we created a resource for teachers to talk about gender identity issues in an elementary classroom with the use of children’s literature.
