Abstract
Providing students with college information early on in their education is crucial for their future careers, particularly for Latino students, many of who are first generation college students. For this capstone project, the researcher interviewed teachers and principals of Pajaro Valley Elementary to learn their perspectives regarding the importance of raising college awareness for elementary school students. Findings revealed a significant challenge was raising parents’ awareness of the processes involved in helping their children pursue a college education. Furthermore, getting access to this type of information can be difficult for Latino students and their parents because of language barriers. Analyses of interview data and relevant research literature were used to design and develop an action project that educates students about higher education through a lesson plan designed to be presented to elementary students before visits to university sites.
