Jonathan Scales is an innovator. He has taken an instrument that is deeply connected to particular regional styles and is using it in a different context. In making his art he borrows freely from Caribbean styles, as well as jazz, classical, rock, funk, and more. This allows him to set expectations and then meet or subvert them at will. This keeps his music sounding fresh and exciting.
