Bassist/bandleader/arranger John Clayton is one of jazz’s treasures as a solo performer as well as a brilliant sideman with the likes of Diana Krall. Recently, he had performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival in a tribute to bassist Ray Brown. But rather than focus on fellow bassists, he agreed to listen to large-ensemble and big band music, given that his last year’s orchestrated work honoring MJF’s 60th anniversary, Stories Of A Groove: Conception, Evolution, Celebration, was the best commission piece in the last two decades offered to the audience there.
