Description

Simon Salinas, currently district 3 supervisor, describes his life as one of twelve children of migrant farm workers from San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Raised in both Texas and California following the seasons, Simon shares stories of his family during the 1950’s -70’s, focusing on issues of social injustices, education, activism and validation of the Mexican American experience. I start the interview by asking about his family background and experiences as migrant farmer workers. Simon then goes on to explain what it was like for him growing up and he shares memories of his time in school while growing up. Throughout the interview Simon refers back to how education was important to him because it is through education that he was able to start to question and think critically about everything around him. He says that through his education he was able to become an advocate for his community.
