Description

My interview concerns the life of Pat Simon Cariaga, as well as her relation to Chinatown in Salinas, California. Pat’s father was Filipino and her mother was German, and divorced when Pat was very young. Pat and her brother Tom remained with their father in Salinas, and lived for a summer in Chinatown. Pat describes her father’s hard work, laboring in the lettuce fields and also managing the Green and Gold Hotel in Chinatown. She remembers Chinatown as a happy place, and discusses what she experienced as a young person in the town. In addition, Pat also notes her experiences in Salinas while growing up. She touches on topics such as school, her neighborhood, her household, and cooking. Although Pat showed a great love for her father, she mentions many times that he was not very open with both Pat and her brother. Therefore, she lacks information about some personal subjects that she might have otherwise known. However, Pat speaks about her own family, and one of her son’s trips to the Philippines. The interview is wrapped up with Pat’s personal hopes for Chinatown.
