Description
John Macias, Marina Macias Martinez, and Leticia Hernandez describe their story growing up with their father Julian who was a migrant farm worker that immigrated with the Bracero Program, and their mother who stayed and took care of the home. John Macias describes working in the fields with the Braceros at the age of 6, having his father instill hard work ethic into him and working on and off in the fields until the age of 25. John had followed his fathers footsteps and entered the military. He became a Marine at the age of 17 going to Vietnam and discovering racism for the first time. John’s father Julian Macias served as a driver in WWII, John’s uncle was a cook. Marina and Leticia add insight into the experiences felt throughout Salinas and Gonzalez where they lived. Family is always illustrated as the main focus within the Macias realm. John describes the Republic that was located in Chinatown and the narrators address changes they have witnessed since the time they were children. Violence has grown evidently throughout the years. John has been an active person participating in education for 35 years and continues to carry on the positive reputation that the Macias name holds. Marina explains how they didn’t recognize they were poor at the time because they went to many places, and had a lot of love within the family. All three children have continued to honor their parents who have passed on making sure to care for people. The story properly displays how a Latino family created a strong bond to face challenges, to help field workers, immigrants, homeless, anyone that was searching for help, and how they are passing these values on to their sons, daughters, and grandchildren.
