Description
Raised by her grandparents, Ms. Gloria De La Rosa learned about hard work at a very young age. At nine years old, every summer until she was seventeen years old, she was working in the fields along with her grandparents later joined by her sisters and parents. Gloria describes her experiences as a fieldworker and thus provides us with insight into the life of a fieldworker. Gloria also discusses the harsh working conditions that fieldworkers had to abide by before any changes were brought by Cesar Chavez who she is very thankful for. Gloria also describes the uplifting spirit of community out in the fields which helped to alleviate the harsh working conditions that the field workers were exposed to. Gloria also recounts her first experience in a huelga (strike) which was initiated by her mother. She “saw her mother in action” and witnessing such situation sparked an interest to become an advocate for those in need of support. Gloria also describes the Bracero men as “young men in their white garments and Mexican hats”. She recalls how her grandfather was an advocate for many of these men who had little or no education. She shares stories of Chinatown and how it has changed over the years. Gloria explains that her fieldwork experience and hard labor have made her a stronger woman and a more appreciative human being. Ms. De La Rosa describes her gratitude towards her grandparents and parents and she concludes the interview by expressing the importance of bringing peace to our communities and also the concept of giving back to our communities
