Description
Gertrude Queturas is an 86-year-old woman living in Salinas, CA and is an active and involved member of the Filipino community. Born and raised in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, Gertrude was immersed in a family full of teachers. Thus, she and her three brothers also pursued the profession, each gaining teaching degrees from the Philippine Normal University. With aid from her youngest brother, who had landed a job working for a Japanese airline and therefore had moved to live in Hawaii, Gertrude was able to find her place in America. Following her marriage in the early 1960’s, she was able to move with her husband into a small house in Salinas. After moving to America, Gertrude experienced adventure through her acculturation into American society. While she faced hardships, she also made triumph in the birth of her daughter, success working at the Monterey County Recording Office, and extension of her education at Hartnell College. In her old age, Gertrude Queturas reflects back on her life, and while she sees an unfortunate decay of her traditional culture, she also sees a bright future for youths and hopes to instill her legacy within them, no matter how small.
