This interview gives insight and details about Chinatown and Soledad Street in the 1950s and 1960s from the point of view of Cathy Chavez Miller. Cathy’s grandmother owned El Faro Mexican Restaurant (currently Victory Mission) as well as Mi Cantina Bar. Cathy’s comprehensive description of her time spent at El Faro paints a beautiful picture of a vibrant Salinas Chinatown in the 50s and 60s. The interview includes thoughts about economics, gender, and racial outlooks of Salinas within the time period. Cathy also shares her ideas about Chinatown today and the plans for the future. While sharing her memories of Chinatown Cathy also tells the story of her own life and leaving Salinas and finding herself in Santa Cruz and finally landing in Watsonville opening her own strawberry farm with her husband.
