Abstract
The focus issue addressed in this Capstone Project is how to improve students’ reading comprehension. This is an important issue for teachers because struggling readers can have difficulty learning other subjects that are reliant on reading texts. An evidence-based argument is offered supporting the use of phonics-based reading instruction, like the Science of Reading. Considerations of the issue should include the perspectives of administrators and teachers. From an analysis of the interview data, three different action options were explored as ways to address the issue presented. Teaching the Science of Reading approach during the teacher credential process is argued to be the most effective way to achieve the goals of increasing student reading comprehension.
