Abstract
Community-based organizations serving pediatric patients and their families often support populations that face challenges related to health care accessibility, including financial constraints and limited resources. The purpose of this internship project was to grow Extra Life, a gaming-based fundraising program that supports pediatric health care initiatives in the tri-county area and raise funds for Salinas Valley Health. The project was implemented at the CSUMB Otter Student Union as a community event serving students, community members, faculty, and alumni. Key activities included a 10-hour stream, several gaming tournaments, interactive gaming stations, and an informational table to raise awareness and funds for pediatric health. As a result of the project, this Extra Life fundraising event surpassed its initial goal of $1,000 dollars, surpassing two milestones, fundraising a total of $2,676, just short of the 3,000 goal. From the post-event survey, participants demonstrated a positive experience and an increase in awareness of Extra Life’s impact on pediatric healthcare. These findings highlight the importance of community involvement in health and human services settings.
