Abstract

The benefits of parental involvement and more precisely that of Latino parent involvement in their children’s education have led to higher academic achievement; however, why is that Latino parents are often seen as uninvolved? The purpose of this senior capstone is to examine the benefits, barriers, and the types of Latino parental involvement in their children’s education. It will also look at the role of an in-house after school program, “MidPen Housing” in supporting Latino parents to get involved with their children’s education. Through the use of literature review, interviewing with its personnel, the results indicate that MidPen Housing after school program was able to support Latino parents by breaking the language barrier preventing and supporting Latino parents that further their support their children’s academic work. This type of in-housing after school programs provides a different approach to bridging school and home involvement.
