Abstract
With the ongoing increase of Latinos in the United States, as well as the decline of Latino students’ overall school performance and academic success, it is imperative to look at the teachers’ response to students’ culture and the effects it has on the educational performance of elementary Latino students. The purpose of this senior capstone project is to examine the benefits of culturally responsive teachers for elementary Latino students. Through the use of literature, principal interviews, teacher interviews as well as surveys around the Monterey Bay area, the results indicate that teachers who are aware and responsive to the ethnic and cultural background of the students’ increase students’ academic performance.
