Abstract

The participants of the research project from the University of California San Francisco are Latinas with disabilities who have not yet had their mammogram in the past twelve months. This research paper will give us an understanding of why Latinas do not have access to health care coverage and education about Breast Cancer. Fewer women with major physical disabilities follow up with their doctors, but what about those who do not know that they have a disability? How will these women have access to a physical and a mammogram? Half as many Latinas get a mammogram compared to women who are not Latina. The Central Coast Center for Independent Living and researchers from the University of California San Francisco have developed and implemented a culturally appropriate intervention to teach women about Breast Cancer, mammography and strategies for healthcare self-advocacy.
