Abstract
Coping with stress is an issue for many adolescents. Thus, it is important to teach both the meaning of stress and different coping skills to adolescents. Seventh and eighth grade middle school students were surveyed to find out what they know and how they cope with stress. Results suggest that adolescents do not understand the signs of stress in themselves. Therefore, it is important that teachers and students understand some of the common causes of stress. Additional findings indicate a need for more tools for managing stress. Thus, students were taught how to cope with stress in positive ways, namely exercising, deep breathing and stretching (Yoga), music for healing, being positive within one’s self and toward others, and learning how to be sensitive and caring through the use of pets. Students learned that they could manage their stress through communication skills, trying new things for stress management and with awareness that there are different ways in which people cope with stress.
